WAYWO - Death by Pointy Sticks

Sun May 04, 2008 at 03:29:32 PM PDT

No, not this kind - we're in a different kind of war here. And it starts on May 9.

The war is conducted with these sticks and some very fine and beautiful string ... er, yarn.

Yes, it's time for SOCK WARS III!!!

Extreme knitting - who'd have thunk it? Julie Gardner, that's who.

It was started by Julie Gardner, a 31-year-old freelance TV and film production manager in Belfast, Northern Ireland, a couple years ago after she heard about StreetWars, a game that uses mock weapons and is popular on college campuses.

Gardner was excited about pitting knitters against each other with a sudden-death spin.

This year, Sock Wars is sponsored by Southwest Trading Company, and they are offering a $500 yarn prize to the last knitter standing. If that winning knitter used Tofutsies yarn to make their first kill, they also get one of each colorway of the Tofutsies sock yarn. That's SIXTY SKEINS OF YARN!!

I'm participating this year for the very first time, one of over 1,000 warriors. Since I'm making a pair of socks for my mom for Mother's Day, I am seeing nothing but socks in my immediate future! The deadline for entering is unfortunately past (it was yesterday), but here's the webpage for Sock Wars III with all the details.

I hope I make it past round one!

Now it's time to chitchat - what are YOU working on?
