Top Comments 1/9/08 - A Long List

Wed Jan 09, 2008 at 07:12:44 PM PDT

Recently, I was introduced to the concept of 101 Things in 1001 Days, and I am embracing it. The basic concept is simple - you make a list of 101 definable tasks to do in 1001 days. People's lists are available to view on the website, and it's really interesting to see what constitutes a "task" to these people, what they really want to do.

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Aha! Specific tasks - that's where many of us go wrong. "Lose weight"? How about "Lose 20 pounds"?

Random Ideas from the website:

~ Sing at a karaoke bar
   ~ Go skiing
~ Sponsor a child in a third world country
~ Write at least 5 new songs on guitar
~ Host a board game night
   ~ Go Geocaching

Random funny items from other people's lists:

~ Learn to cook an artichoke
~ Solve a "hard" crossword without cheating
~ Get a Jesus bobble head for my car
~ Donate blood. Donate thrice more if I'm not permanently scarred from the first experience.
~ Go to bed when I'm tired instead of running on empty for at least ten nights
~ Dye my hair an unnatural color before I have to be an adult
~ Buy at least 1 new pair of an undergarment

And some sweet ones:

~ write letters to my mentors telling them what a great job they’ve done
~ send twelve postcards to twelve different people
~ put the bird girl figure that I bought my granny at her gravesite
~ Give Homer a gift "just because"
~ Be a mentor for somebody else
~ Feed the homeless on Christmas Day

There's even a LiveJournal community dedicated to the 101/1001. LOTS of people are doing this!

Possible ideas for Kossacks -

Volunteer for a candidate
Donate to a campaign
Put up a sign in yard or window supporting a candidate
Volunteer for Election Day
Get an early/mail in ballot

I know there are lots more - what would you put on your list of 101 things?

The comments!

Adding nonnie9999 at the top, where she belongs!

Greasy Grant's response to the news that Grampa Fred got 1% in New Hampster.
eastvan had some advice for the GOP.
Randomfactor does some new gooper math.
Bob Love closes with an etiquette lesson.

From asimbagirl:

I thought that this comment by GreyHawk from markthshark's recommended diary about the elusive White House emails was wonderful - it crystallized what I've been wishing for these past few years.

From brillig:

In condoleaser's diary RedState NOT Formenting Revolution!!! (with POLL!!!), revbludge makes beautiful doggerel.

In kath25's diary Let's Talk About the Republican Primary Instead, Moody Loner says Mitt's second-place finish in NH is good training. (I would've nominated it anyway, but discocarp also thought this was comment of the day.)

From litigatormom:

I thought this was the perfect response to Tweety's assertion that Hillary Clinton became a Senator because people felt sorry for her after the Monica scandal.

The true meaning of "fair and balanced".

From Spathiphyllum:

XStryker has a funny idea for how RedState could upgrade their comment system in SteamPunkX's diary: Redstate 3.0 Mark III.

From sobermom:

I usually prefer longer comments but this one liner by haruki in a diary about dissatisfaction with news pundits seemed to get right to the heart of the matter.  For the record, I didn't watch any tv but followed the results on Politco and dKos.

From kath25:

arquebus has a list of several reasons why things look good for us in the general election, regardless of who we or the GOP nominate.

plf515 accurately describes Fred Thompson's candidacy.

From arielle:

This comment provided a much needed laugh!
It was in Geekesque's diary - Don't jump ship on Edwards - in response to a typo.

From CTLiberal:

I don't know if anyone's put in this comment by Kos, but it cracked me up.

This isn't a comment, but the picture I loved of Tweety from jeff y in djshay's diary on last night's T.V winner, Rachel Maddow.

From bubbanomics:

unterhausen has a great observation of one of the things 9-11 changed.

From sardonyx:

The awful depths of Diebold depravity are revealed by Larry McAwful, and elaborated further by MyOwnClone and others as the thread descends. Also from the same diary, gchaucer2 reveals that a new Chaucerian tale is in the works.

Ekaterin points out yet one more way we Massachusettsians can claim bragging rights.

In ct's diary Mojo Revamp & a Bonus Goodie, you can tell it's truly desperate in the mojo disappearance department when kos needs to make a funny. More humor is to be found downthread.

My picks:

I found this point by RFK Lives in Jerome a Paris' diary, Blame the Poor to be very interesting.

LNK posts a wonderful quote in teacherken's When words you hear surprise you - NOT a candidate diary.

My other choices were nabbed by other people, so I will refrain from re-posting them! :D
