Top Comments 1/30/08 - I Don't Read Romance Novels

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 07:01:24 PM PDT

There's a good reason I don't read romance novels - I grew up on Harlequin Romances.

They were awful. Those books required a suspension of disbelief that I was ultimately unable to maintain. I also can only take so much of "heaving bosoms", ya know?

But there is a candle in the romance novel darkness. Bear with me, here. I am not recommending that you read ANY romance novels. No, I would not do that to you, I promise.

Not that I couldn't use some escapist fiction, but I prefer to escape in other directions. Stephen King and Dean Koontz are more to my taste.

What I want you to do is read the REVIEWS of the truly terrible romance novels. There is much delicious snark, and flat-out disbelieving nastiness in these reviews. You might even laugh out loud!

For instance, this review of Cassie Edwards' Savage Moon. It is hilarious!

Vowing revenge for the kidnapping of his sister, he dresses as an Indian and attacks Indian camps and wagon trains, scalping and killing everyone in site, and saving the scalps as tribute to his lost sister. As soon as he finds Chief Bear, whom he doesn’t know has had his chiefly brains turned into a cerebral scramble, he plans on quitting his life of bloody crime and going off to St. Louis to be an opera singer.

No really. I’m not making that up.

Thanks to the Smart Bitches, we snarky romance-novel haters have someone on our side.

Anyway, they are lots of fun.

On to the comments!

From Lashe:

A beautiful comment (by RenaRF, especially after the vitriol in the candidate diaries.

From Man in the Middle:

cnmh bursts into song.

From madgranny:

Bill in Portland Maine and condoleaser discuss the newest members of the RNC, in Cheers and Jeers today.

From peace voter:

Some folks post diaries that would be more appropriately be posted as comments, while others post comments that would make worthy and substantial diaries.  One such thoughtful and moving comment was posted by SarahLee reflecting on what John Edward's departure from the primary meant to her.

From Asinus Asinum Fricat:

AAF agrees with JimJ's assessment of Barack Obama's political genius.

From dogheaven:

Dave the Rave* gets the whole Republican Primary in one picture here.  Fantastic.

From PerfectStormer:

Marc in CA's comment in the Bonus Open Thread was funny, but Hedwig's response made me snarf my soda.

My picks:

This comment by racerx caught my attention. Very interesting.

Excellent usage of a funny picture by saildude. I concur. WARNING: whatever you do, DON'T read the parent comment. You can't say I didn't warn you.
