I blogged about this already, but this is worth reading:
By the way, this right wing smear on Robert Malley is just moronic if you know the facts. Here is what NBC News had to say: One of the Obama campaign's informal Middle East advisers, Robert Malley, confirms to NBC NEWS that he has resigned from any role in the campaign because critics have tried to make an issue of his meetings with Hamas. The Times of London called him about it this morning, and has posted a story online. As a result, he called Obama's campaign today and took himself out of any future role. Malley's paid job is with the International Crisis Group, which, he says, requires him to meet with Hamas and others. Malley worked for six and a half years at the Clinton National Security Council under Tony Lake and Sandy Berger. Lake is now one of Obama's top foreign policy advisors. Speaking to NBC NEWS, Malley said, "I decided based on the fact that this was becoming a distraction that it was best that I remove myself from any association with the campaign." Malley added, "My job with the International Crisis Group is to meet with all sorts of savory and unsavory people and report on what they say. I've never denied whom I meet with; that's what I do." Malley said he always informs the State Department in advance and briefs them afterward. So Kevin James was lying about Robert Malley. He wasn't "secretly working in confidence with Hamas". He was gathering information to file a report on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This right wing attack is total bullshit. So what is the "International Crisis Group", you ask? Here is the Wikipedia description: The ICG is considered the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments, and intergovernmental bodies like the United Nations, European Union and World Bank, on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. Its primary goals are a unique combination of field-based analysis, sharp-edged policy prescription, and high-level advocacy, with key roles being played by a senior management team highly experienced in government and by a highly active Board of Trustees containing many senior diplomats. So basically, this is the equivalent of smearing a Red Cross worker who met with the junta in Burma while delivering food supplies to the typhoon victims. Or smearing a United Nations staffer who talks with Hezbollah leaders while preparing a report on Iranian terrorism for the Security Council. Malley was just a policy analyst who was doing his job.

Hardball Episode On May 15, 2008, James appeared on Hardball debating with host Chris Mathews and supporting the remarks made by President of the United States George W. Bush's May 15, 2008 speech to the Knesset in Israel, where Bush implied that there was a parallel between the appeasement towards Hitler and the policies of leading Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama, in reference to Obama expressing a willingness to meet with the leaders of U.S. adversaries. Although reiterating what Bush said, James admitted that "he did not know" what Neville Chamberlain's "appeasement" in World War 2 was, after being repeatedly challenged by host Chris Matthews to clarify his remarks on the subject. This led Mathews to state: "if you don't know what appeasement is about then don't talk about it." Matthews accused James of being a "blank slate", who didn't know anything about history, and likened James to White House spokesman Dana Perino, who in a public appearance had no idea what the Cuban Missile Crisis was. The episode continued on for 9 minutes.[4][5][6][7]

Honestly, though, the USS Cole thing would be an easy mistake to make, if you were just asked off the top of your head. You could conflate it with the attack on the USS Stark (which happened near the end of Reagan's presidency, but still...).
Kevin James is clearly an idiot, but I'm not one who thinks every public figure has to have a perfect recollection of all historical events at all moments. Normally I dislike gotcha games played on camera, but this one is really funny. And if you're going to go on TV to complain about appeasement, you should be able to blurt "Munich", at least, when someone asks about Chamberlain.

of Matthews has been that he (and Russert et al) contribute to the trivialization of politics, not that they are unfair. Indeed, this particular brand of trivialization (aggressively pursuing flag-pin and horse-race issues) can be linked directly to a desire to be simultaneously tough and nonpartisan.

I've always felt that the demand that we don't even TALK to the other side amounts to demanding that they build their half of a suspension bridge before we even hire an engineer for our half.
There is the chance they'll only waste our time, but that should be decided by the President when planning for the summit. At this point, there aren't many adversaries that would be disheartened if they never met with us. There are some where we can legitimately hope that negotiations will be able to reach a mutually satisfactory solution.

Whatever else can be said about Neville Chamberlaine, the Munich Peace Accord stripped Hitler's propaganda machine of its ability to convince skeptics that Britain and France were still trying to hold Germany to the terms of an unfair Versailles Treaty.
by Judge Moonbox on Thu May 15, 2008 at 06:32:30 PM PDT
so the Munich Accord delayed the war for a year.
Not saying that was worth it, but it shows that Chamberlaine did have a rationale for his appeasement. (At this time, the West, especially Great Britain, still hoped fascist Germany would rid them of the Communist threat, they didn't recognize the Nazis' real aspirations.)
"The way to win a Presidential race against the Republicans is to develop the class warfare issue..." Lee Atwater, Bush `88 campaign manager.

It delayed war for a year? Not if you were Czech. I suppose war could have been delayed for another year, too, if France and England had let Germany invade Poland for free, too. And then another year if they let Hitler have the Low Countries.
It doesn't "delay war" if you let the enemy make military advances without opposition!
by elDDeR on Fri May 16, 2008 at 04:57:17 AM PDT
As I wrote in this post (to the other diary exactly like this one):
http://www.dailykos.com/...
The French and English wouldn't have been able to (nor were they eventually able to) beat the Germans. In the absence of US or USSR assistance, they were in no position to put up any opposition. (The Soviets weren't going to help in 1938 and, well, as late as 1939 Gallup poll would show that 94% of Americans don't want to join in a war in Europe.)
All they could do is delay war, hoping for an economic improvement or hoping that the US or USSR change their minds.
by sesquioxide on Fri May 16, 2008 at 05:19:44 AM PDT
At the time Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, Stalin was purging his generals. Forged documents by German spymaster Reinhardt Heydrich got the famously paranoid Stalin to think his generals were plotting against him. The purge led to the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-Aggression Pact. (The purge might have happened anyways.)
For all his suspiciousness, Stalin didn't think that Hitler would invade the USSR until he did in June, 1941.
by Judge Moonbox on Fri May 16, 2008 at 06:12:37 PM PDT
Please don't forget that allowing Hitler to walk into Czechoslovakia gave the Germans the substantial Czech arms industry. More importantly, Czechoslovakia borders Poland, which gave Hitler's armies another geographic front from which to attack.
